Mary Fildes (1789- 1876) was a political activist.
Mary was born in Cork, Ireland and married William Fildes in 1808.
They had eight children. Mary was a leading figure in the Manchester Female Reform Group and spoke at the demonstration in St Peter’s Field in Manchester, known later as the Peterloo Massacre.
Mary herself was attacked by the yeomanry and badly injured.
Luckily, she survived this and went on to be active in the Chartist movement.
Mary later moved to Chester and ran the Shropshire Arms in Frodsham Street (now demolished).
